It’s not that they mean to do you harm (in most cases) it’s just that when you are starting out you simply don’t know what you don’t know! You don’t know where to turn, who to trust or even what it is you’re supposed to learn. And there’s so much to learn.

Once you start looking you see there are hundreds of programs all promising the earth and everyone looks like it must be the answer to your prayers.

Go ahead, if you dare. Buy into a few. You’ll learn something about online business and I guarantee you’ll also learn the biggest lesson there is to learn about internet marketing…

You simply cannot trust everything you read.

It all sounds so straightforward. Everything will be explained. Everything works on autopilot – you’ll be making enough money to retire on 5 minutes from now! All you need to do is count your money.

You read it again. Everything said makes sense, they’ve shown the proof – how can you fail?

If you do nothing else here at Fast Home Business Success, please, I’ll say that louder – PLEASE, go back and read that sales page again and ask yourself a few questions…

• What exactly is it that’s being sold?

• What else apart from the “program” will you need?

• How much extra money will you need to spend?

• Who can you ask if something doesn’t make sense?

• Who is behind the program and can you really trust he has your best interest at heart?

Over the past few years I’ve read hundreds of online sales letters. Many are brilliant. They have you dreaming of the millionaire lifestyle. The words used have struck every emotion in your body and you believe without a shadow of doubt that this is the one.

They all offer “Money Back” Guarantees – how can you possibly lose?

If I had my time again I would be so much wiser. You have to read between the glossy shiny lines. What is this really? What will I have to do? What assumptions are being made about what I already know?

Please, don’t get me wrong. There are some really good guys out there with some really good products but the rubbish, I’m sad to say, far outweighs the quality information.

So many programs don’t even tell you what it is you’ll be doing! How can you realistically buy into that. You may hate the idea once you’ve parted with your cash or find that you’re expected to build a new website everyday to earn the money they’re talking about.

And so many of these sales letters show screen shots of Clickbank and Paypal accounts giving the illusion that the money has been created days after using the program being sold.

Please, take a step back. That really isn’t the case. Most of the sales come from existing lists of thousands of potential customers or deals with Joint Venture partners who have access to thousands of existing customers. Do you have such a list yet? If not don’t expect the same results.

How to set up a website (I mean a “real site” not one of those “push-button” sites that simply don’t work!)

How to install a Shopping Cart

How to configure an autoresponder

How to drive traffic to your sites

How to add products/files to the site to be downloaded

How to create pdf reports

How to use Google Adwords

How to get Joint Venture partners

The list goes on and on. I could send you to sleep!

And what about those programs that offer the world for just $xx and then as soon as you’ve entered your credit card details they present you with the expensive upsell that you absolutely must have to get you streets ahead of the competition. Not to mention the extra programs you need or the autoresponder costs they omitted to tell you about.

What about getting a response from the owner of the site? Is there a way to make contact or is it just through a third party “Help Desk”?

Please don’t misunderstand my motives here…

Some of these programs are fantastic. Even the ones that don’t tell you in advance exactly what you’ll be getting. The issue is that when you’re starting out you simply don’t know what you need or what questions to ask and you WILL end up wasting money on some things you either don’t need or you’re simply not ready for – yet. The following may shock or even appall you…

There is no magic pill or button. It is ALL down to hard work and understanding.

Regardless of what you are told and I’m sure, like I did, you want to believe the hype that there is a hidden secret to making money online that is just waiting to be uncovered.

You’ll see promotions that scream “you don’t even need a website”. While that is true to a degree you will NEVER build a long term sustainable business that way.

The fundamentals are as easy as this…

You need a domain name (something like – fast-home-business-success.com for example)

You need a website

You must be in complete control of the website

You must learn how to update and change things on your own site

You need something of quality to give away to encourage people to “sign-up” at your site

You need an autoresponder to collect the names of those people and to contact them “automatically” in the future

You need to build a relationship with those people (see autoresponder above)

You need something of value to sell or promote (your own product; a good quality affiliate product or an Advert for example)

You need to get your “sales” message in front of people (e.g. get traffic to your site)

You need a way to accept payment from your visitors in exchange for your product (unless selling affiliate products)

Everything else is just a way of improving on the above list. Better website, better graphics, different traffic strategies, better sign-up rates, better conversion to customers.

I could go on but the point is you can do what you need to do to get online and fast, without all of the over-hyped & over-priced products that have sprung up everywhere.

What other business in the world could be started at such a low cost?

Most businesses require premises and that means rent, rates, insurance, heating, lighting…

And what about the cost of stock and office equipment. Staff maybe. And you still have to get to your place of work.

Of course, at this point there is still much to learn but at least you have your “store” open and you can continue to improve and learn while you earn.

But what if you don’t know anything about getting a domain name, choosing a hosting company or WordPress? What if you have no idea about building a website or setting up an autoresponder and linking it to a download file? What if you don’t have an e-book to give away or don’t have anything to sell?

There’s no hype coming up. There’s nothing hidden. I’m going to tell you exactly how it is. What you get, what you can expect, why you need it and how much it will cost.

If you’d rather read a glitzy page with promises of overnight riches I’m afraid you’re at the wrong site.

There’s no substitute for knowledge and there’s no way that I would be prepared to run a business that is dependant on other people. I wouldn’t let my family and friends do that and I won’t let you do it either.

It is essential you learn the basics of running your own website and understand at least how to make minor amendments.

When I started a new business a few years ago I paid a ridiculous amount of money for a website and still had to go back to the design company when I wanted to make any changes – and in today’s world change is a given! And guess what – they wanted more money to make even the slightest change and took days to get round to doing it.

You must retain control of your own site – it is your gateway to your customers and you cannot run the risk of somebody else deciding your future.

I realised this first after spending the best part of my first year online building a website that used “building blocks” to add content. It took ages and there was little control over the end result. You had to have what was offered or not at all. As soon as I wanted to add different fonts and colours and tables or video I found I was stuck. I started to look around at the options and decided that I just didn’t want to learn HTML so that I could create a “traditional” type of website. The learning curve was too great. At the time “blogging” had become the latest craze and I started a “blog” on blogger.com. I soon found the same limitations as I had faced before PLUS I was very concerned that I had no control over the site. If blogger.com closed down or decided they didn’t like my site because I had breached something in the small print I was in BIG trouble.

WordPress was the obvious choice for me. It was at the time the best blogging platform but I’d read it was evolving and being used by many people for complete websites and I decided to take a closer look. And that’s when I caught the WordPress love bug!

Everything about WordPress made sense to me. I was using my domain name (giving me control and search engine benefits), my hosting and I immediate saw how easy and flexible the whole system was to use. And since then WordPress has evolved into the thing of beauty it is today. I’m really not a “techie” but I can do virtually anything I need to with WordPress and if I do ever hit a technical snag there are thousands of willing helpers around the world to point me in the right direction.
